The Sheep Fire is burning in San Bernardino County, in the Inland Empire of Southern California.

The fire behavior is wild for June in California, even in San Bernardino. Check out this footage:

As you can see, these little pine trees are full engulfed within seconds. It’s only June.

Meanwhile, People Think Goats are the Answer

I’m currently hard at work on my book revision, and in my book I write about the damage that grazing has done to the ecosystems in the west particularly. One of the reasons we have invasive grasses? Grazing. Impacted soil? Grazing.

Yet goats are being used to clear land in California. I will say, it looks like the goats are being implemented with supervision, but I really hope people don’t start screaming about goats being the answer to our prayers.

The good thing about goats is that they will eat invasive plants, whereas other livestock can’t stomach it. That said, they’ll also eat native grasses, so I’m not sure what the end game is here…

Yeah, I'd like more info and data on the "goat solution" that is being so hyped. Thanks for your work, Jan.

Terrible unwelcome news of the San Bernardino fire. The goats seem like a great idea.
